I am happiest when I am surrounded by trees. That calming and happy feeling that I get from being out in the middle of nature really helps to ease the anxiety that builds up from living in and being surrounded by suburbia. Whether I am out kayaking down the nearest river or hiking my favorite Texas trails, I can't help but enjoy the peace that the outdoors brings me. I am thoroughly obsessed with the outdoor life, but when snack time rolls around, being the only plant eater can be a bit of a downer if you don't have the right snacks on hand!

It's hard being vegan on the trail, but it doesn't have to be

Raise your hand if you eat a plant-based diet and found yourself wishing you could partake in the outdoor enthusiast's favorite pastime of exchanging food with your fellow outdoor friends. Everyone pulls out their snacks and dehydrated meals and the inevitable beef/turkey/venison jerky and there you are feeling left out because you don't have anything good to trade. It's the tale as old as veganism itself, and it's one that doesn't need to happen in this day and age of Pinterest and Facebook! There are loads of plant-based ways to fuel your outdoor adventures without eating meat!

Eating plant-based doesn't have to mean giving up your favorite foods

If you are new to your plant-based diet, you are likely feeling that giving up meat meant giving up your favorite foods for more exotic flavors. This is totally not the case, though! I grew up in a meat-eating household and the Hippy Hubby and son are both big meat eaters. When I first decided to make the change to a plant-based diet, I found myself craving all my favorite comfort foods. Instead of breaking my diet and going back to what I knew, I decided to try substituting my favorite veggies and plant-based meat substitutes in place of meat in my recipes. It turns out, baby bellas in my spaghetti and black beans in my burgers are JUST as tasty ground beef and fills that craving that your old diet is giving you!

Where did I get those cute reusable bags?

That's the question most often asked during my LIVE video above! I was using Lunchskins reusable sandwich and snack size bags! They come in tons of different colors/patterns and are great to carry your snacks in for day hikes and in lunch boxes!

5 Plant-Based Snacks to Fuel Your Next Adventure

  1. Lightlife Smart Jerky – If you thought that your days of jerky eating were behind you, you thought wrong! Now you can have your jerky and eat it too! I reviewed Lightlife's Smart Jerky (here) a while back and the whole family loved it! In fact, the Hippy Hubby ate my whole stash, commenting on how great both flavors taste! They have both original and teriyaki flavors. I like both flavors, but teriyaki is totally my favorite! This protein packed snack contains 9 grams of protein per serving!
  2. Roasted Chickpeas – If you have never had roasted chickpeas, you are seriously missing out! They remind me of my high school love of corn nuts and you can make them in just as many delicious flavors! They are super easy to make and full of protein to fuel your next adventure.
  3. Strawberry Banana Oatmeal Chia Breakfast Bars – The great thing about these bars is that you can tailor the flavor to your favorite fruits! I don't always make it with strawberries! I have been known to do all sorts of different fruit versions of these bars and they always contain my favorite combo of chia, hemp, and flax for the energy boost that fuels your day!
  4. Raw No-Bake Energy Bars – Just like the breakfast bars, these contain my favorite chia/hemp/flax combo but don't need to be baked! These bars are made with a date paste and whatever ingredients you need for the flavor of your choice. I am a big fan of the coconut dreams flavor! Coconut and chocolate…yum!!!
  5. Honey Cinnamon Nut Butter – Whenever I want a quick pick-me-up boost of energy or am feeling jittery, I always turn to nut butter. I don't like my nut butter plain so I like to add a dash of cinnamon and raw unfiltered honey to mine. Just mix and enjoy! When on the trail, I like to use these squeeze containers to carry my nut butter mix, and just squeeze it right into your mouth! If nut allergies are a problem for you, try hemp butter or sunflower butter! Both are delicious alternatives that contain no nuts!

Lightlife foods, meat without the middleman

Founded in an old converted car wash in 1979, Lightlife (then known as Tempeh Works) became the first tempeh product on the mainstream market. Over time, they plowed the way for other plant proteins, until the 90's where they introduced their fat-free Smart Dogs, now the #1 best-selling refrigerated vegetarian product in the United States. Throughout the years, they have revolutionized the market further with Smart Deli and Gimme Lean Sausage. Due to concerns about the sustainability of ingredients in the food chain, in 1999 Lightlife publicly pledged that all products will be GMO-free, eight years before the Non-GMO Project is founded. Now, in 2017, all of their products are enrolled in the Non-GMO Project! They truly have been paving the way for the rest of us veggie heads, since before this Hippy was born ('83 if you were wondering!).
