In the spirit of the holiday season, I have been on a mission to come up with holiday traditions that keep that magic without the need for Santa Claus. Yes, you heard right. The Hippy Husband and I don’t feel the need to propagate the Santa Claus myth in our household. I am aware that most of you think that I am crazy for not partaking in the “magic of Christmas” (believe me, I heard it from my own parents when we told them.) in our household. I really think that there are many other traditions that we can create for our family that really makes things more special. The first thing that I thought of was handmade gifts. (I mean, how would it be “hippy homemaker” if it wasn’t handmade?)
I have decided that every year, the Hippy Husband, Syfy, and I will each hand-make one present for each other. I think this will make our gifting a lot more special and force us to have to think about what each other would enjoy. This year, knowing that Syfy is ALWAYS playing with our mailbox and wanting to send “letters” to each of us, I decided to buy a bunch of felt and make him a mailbox with envelopes that he could put letters in and mail off.
I didn’t follow any kind on instructions or pattern on this one. I totally just fashioned this entire project, all by myself. I had wanted to sew this with my sewing machine but it turns out it was a hand sewing type of project, so I ended up hand sewing the entire thing this whole last weekend.
I sewed him envelopes that have velcro on the flaps, so that he can “seal” his letters and mail them off. I also sewed velcro on the top of the mailbox and on the lid, so that the mailbox would stay shut, if he so chooses. I used the really hard felt to make the actual mailbox and the softer kind of felt was used for the envelopes. I even sewed on little stamps onto the envelopes!
I have great ideas to make cute heart valentines and other kinds of letters/postcards/envelopes for future holidays too. I think he is going to go crazy for this baby, which makes me super proud to show off my handwork!
What kinds of different holiday traditions are you making with your family? I sure could use some great ideas for next year!
<3 you, Hippy Lovers!
