I keep seeing commercials for the new Downy fabric softener crystals and mention of the Purex softener crystals in blogs that I read through. You know that I will not use those in my house because of all of the cancer and allergen causing chemicals that those products are laden with, but I still was on the lookout to better my laundry soap recipe with something natural that works along the lines of what those products claim to do. Look no further Hippy fans, I have found the answer that has added so much more softness to my laundry that I can’t believe how easy it was! Even the Hippy husband was impressed by the softness that this added to our clean laundry!

I add one cup of this Laundry Softener Crystals to my Homemade Laundry Soap and mix it all together, using the same amount of laundry soap as I usually do. I still fill the liquid softener container in my washer with vinegar as an extra added softener boost in my wash.

The Softest Laundry EVER Laundry Softener Crystals 

Ingredients

1 cup ice cream/rock/Epsom salts (any one of these will work, just pick what you have around the house)

40 drops essential oils (I chose to use a combination of 20 drops sweet orange essential oil, 10 drops lemon essential oil, and 10 drops tangerine essential oil)

Directions

Mix ingredients together and add 1 tsp to your laundry. I just add the cup to the batch of laundry soap that I am mixing up and mix it all together.

      I personally like to use the NOW Foods essential oils because of their prices for quality on amazon.com, but the very high quality essential oils come from http://www.younglivingoils.com and mountainroseherbs.com all are 100% pure though

    Hello, 2 questions – Why do you add the softener to the wash cycle and not to the rinse cycle where it’s normally done? And wouldn’t the vinegar in the rinse cycle overpower and negate the scent from the essential oils in the wash cycle? There’d be no scent left after the vinegar was done with it, surely?

      I add my vinegar to the liquid softener container in my washer so it is added during the rinse cycle, you can just add it to the rinse cycle if you do not have a softener area in your washer. I use essential oils in my vinegar all purpose spray as well and it has never gotten rid of the smell. I have also never smelled any vinegar smell in my laundry. In fact after adding these softener crystals to my wash, my laundry has smelled MORE like the scent I was making than before. Because we are using natural laundry soap with essential oils and not fake fragrances, there isn’t going to be nearly the strong scent that you would get from the chemical fragrances. You can add a few drops of essential oil to a washcloth or a rolled up pair of tube socks and throw it in the dryer with your clothes to add a little extra scent if you like.

      I used rock salt because that is what I had on hand but Epsom salts work just as well they just tend to be a little bit more expensive than the rock salt. just don’t get the iodized table salt that won’t work the same.
