DIY Citrus Glass & Window Cleaner That Beats Windex

It's spring cleaning time! When I started on my Spring cleaning venture a couple of weeks ago, I suddenly realized…I have been living in darkness. I really had no idea that my windows had gotten so bad over the winter. I suppose I had gotten used to how gross they became, but when I came across Crunchy Betty's Alvin Corn window cleaner recipe, I knew I had to try it out on my own dirty windows and let the light shine through. Lavender Lemon Powdered Dishwasher Detergent For Hard or Soft Water

For the last year and a half I have been making my homemade dishwasher tablets and using them to clean our dishes in the dishwasher, but one day I decided it was high time that I make a simple powdered dishwasher detergent that was more effective and took less time to create. The first time that I had made a powdered dishwasher detergent (with all the ingredients that you saw in the dishwasher tablets), it turned into one big hard rock after 24 hours of sitting in the container, and I was baffled what else to do besides turning it into the dishwasher tablets. Now after reading some more, I have learned that I didn't need all of those ingredients, to begin with! The fact of the matter is, I was making it much harder than it needed to be. Continue reading

DIY Natural Bleach Alternative

I know it's only January right now, but I have been itching for spring hardcore. The other day I was doing some homework reading for my Master Aromatherapy classes and I read about SAD (also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder) and it occurred to me that I was feeling exactly like this. Did you know that millions of people experience this every winter? This year, I have been avoiding the cold more than usual, and that combined with not being able to drive Syfy and me around, has really made me feel like a hermit. To combat this, I have started spring early in my head. I am thinking about tropical scents, planning out the cute yoga tank tops I am going to buy off Etsy, and even taking Syfy to the public pool (it's indoors lol I would not swim in this weather…not a polar bear over here! Although….if given the chance to join the real polar bear club, I would totally try it out because I am the kind of crazy person who would love to tell people that I have done it! Continue reading

DIY Holiday Scented Pine Cone Diffusers

I love to walk in the doors and smell the faint smell of cinnamon and spices in my home. It makes me feel like the holidays are here when I smell such warm inviting spicy scents floating throughout my house. There are plenty of fabulous recipes out there that you can use to make the same apple pie spice scent float throughout your house, but most of those require the use of a burner and on Thanksgiving day no one has room for one burner on their stove to be used just for potpourri. DIY Dish Soap That Actually WORKS – It’s Simple, No Melting and No Waiting!

This post has been a LONG time coming. I have been trying to find a recipe for dish soap that ACTUALLY works, for at least a year now. I have tried just about every single DIY all-natural “crunchy” soap recipe that I could find! Every one of the recipes that I found contained castile soap in them, but I was looking for something less alkaline. The cold hard fact of the mater is that castile soap whether in liquid form, grated bar form, or even a combination of the two just wasn't working well enough to cut the grease and clean my dishes effectively. While those with soft water don't see any issues using castile soap, those with hard water find that all their dishes are covered in mineral deposits or spots. Continue reading

The Hippy Homemaker’s Green Cleaning Starter Kit – The Ultimate Green Friendly Wedding Present

I had the privilege of being invited to one of my long-time friend's wedding and reception this last weekend. Though we weren't able to go to Colorado to make the actual wedding, we were able to go to their reception dinner held here in Texas. When our invitation arrived in the mail, my first thought was “what to make them for their wedding present?”  For a little over a year now, I have made all of the gifts that I have given at the parties that I have been invited to.  Each time, I was invited to a new type of party (i.e. baby showers, bridal showers, and wedding receptions), I came up with a new DIY eco-friendly gifts that I could give. This time around was no different. Continue reading

DIY Dishwasher Tablets For Hard or Soft Water (and homemade Lemishine)

In our old house, I was utilizing castile soap in my dishwasher and always getting fantastic results. I had no clue that the difference in my water softness could make such a huge difference in how well some of my natural cleaning products worked. When we moved into our new home, my first load of dishes came out of the dishwasher covered in a white film. I was beyond disappointed.  At first, I had no idea what had happened, but after doing some reading, I found my problem. If you have really hard water, castile soap will turn the water cloudy, and consequently, will cause your glasses to come out cloudy too. I knew that now I needed to come up with a new dishwashing plan for hard water. Spring Cleaning Your Kids Toys…It’s Not As Daunting As It Seems!

I am sure every mama has experienced it, when you give your child a nice shiny new toy and instantly it is covered in mud/food/juice/slobber/poop, and all that you can do is sigh at the mess, because you know it's not worth your time trying to immediately clean that no longer shiny new toy. I usually just hold my breath and count to ten, telling myself that it doesn't have to be perfect because it's not MINE, it's HIS! Once a year (or maybe every 3 months really), it's time for Spring cleaning again, and there is one area that I always seem to forget when I am cleaning the rest of the house…those dirty food encrusted toys that my child leaves lying ALL OVER THE PLACE!!!

Make Your Own Natural Citrus Softscrub For Your Sinks, Tubs, and Toilets!

I have a “friend” with a bathtub that is so gross, they didn't even want their name to be revealed out of embarrassment, but they did want me to find a great way to clean their bathtub (and sinks, toilets, etc.). I knew that they were looking for a soft scrub, so I got to work finding a recipe that would help to clean up all of the nastiness that was caked on the bathtub's floor.  After a preliminary search of the internet, I found pretty much the same recipes everywhere that I went, and all of them combined both vinegar AND castile soap, and as I have been learning (from Lisa Bronner's blog), that is a big no-no. Have the SOFTEST Laundry Ever By Adding Homemade Softener Crystals to Your Wash

I keep seeing commercials for the new Downy fabric softener crystals and mention of the Purex softener crystals in blogs that I read through. You know that I will not use those in my house because of all of the cancer and allergen causing chemicals that those products are laden with, but I still was on the lookout to better my laundry soap recipe with something natural that works along the lines of what those products claim to do. Continue reading
