Summer has been flying by and I have been trying my best to balance my work and our summertime play. I haven't been doing a great job at working this summer. There's too much fun to be had during the summertime! I don't feel guilty though because I worked my butt off during the Spring to write my newest book; The Complete Book of Essential Oils for Mama & Baby – Safe and Natural Remedies for Pregnancy, Birth, and Children.
One of my most popular posts on this blog is my classic DIY Peace Pits Deodorant Paste recipe. It's so popular in part because we are all trying to find a better alternative to the toxic antiperspirants and deodorants on the market, but it's also because that recipe WORKS! And it works REALLY well! The only problem with that recipe is that some people find themselves too sensitive to use baking soda based deodorants.

It's the dawn of a new year, and I am feeling the yearly need to detoxify myself inside and out! I know I am not alone, so this year I have a whole slew of detoxifying posts to help get you through this first month of the new year. Really, though, you could choose to detoxify yourself at any point during the year! I love to try and focus on detoxification once a month!
I have a secret ingredient that I prefer to use in place of the water in ALL of my DIY beauty products and toiletries. Hydrosols, aka flower waters! I first came across hydrosols in my essential oil studies. I had learned that they were a result of making essential oils, essentially a byproduct. I was fascinated by these gentle essential oil infused waters. Along the way, I learned a lot more about them and their many uses and varieties. I wanted to purchase every hydrosol that I came across but was sorely disappointed when I realized that I couldn't afford to purchase all of the hydrosols that I wanted. What is a DIY loving hippy to do? Make it myself, of course! Now you can too!
If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you should know by now that essential oils are one of my favorite topics! While studying Master Aromatherapy through Demetria Clark at the Heart of Herbs school, I found a love for the science behind aromatherapy and what is truly in a smell. While aromatherapy has been around for a lot longer than many of our modern pharmaceuticals, many people still don't understand the science of smell and how it can work with our bodies to change our mood, help to support our immune system, or even help us to drift off to sleep. While I usually use a roll-on or my living room diffuser to utilize my essential oils, I have always wished that there was a better way to inhale my essential oils personally. Apparently, I had been missing out because there totally is! It looks like an E-cig, but it's NOT! It's a personal essential oil diffuser made by MONQ, and it's totally awesome!
I spent my childhood hiking, backpacking, and camping with my Dad, all over the West coast. I was the daughter that adored the outdoors and couldn't get enough, no matter how dirty or banged up, that I got. The addiction was solidified when we first started hiking through Yosemite National Park. With every trip we took, I soaked in the redwoods and sequoias, the glacier cut boulders and the majestic waterfalls that seem to only exist in Yosemite and my dreams. These trips made me realize that I was born to enjoy the outdoors and that my future was somehow going to be connected to my passion for this amazing place. Fast forward 20 years and now I am planning how I can instill the same great love of the outdoors, in my own son. Hiking out in nature is pretty much one of my favorite activities in the world. I love a good adventure outdoors, but sometimes that means coming back far itchier than you left. Whether you know what to look for and avoid (with poison ivy, oak, and sumac) or not, anyone can end up with a rash before their hike is over! We can all agree that bugs have their purpose in this world, especially our favorites; the pollinators, but getting rid of the pesky ones naturally can sometimes be a bit of a conundrum. What to use that will actually work, is natural, and if eaten won't kill us people, our little ones, and our pets…but still kills pests? The answer is not as tricky as you think! There are a couple fantastic natural options for use against insects and bugs of all kinds, but the one I am sharing with you today is a fantastic All-Purpose bug spray because it can work outside, inside, and on any bug you like! I spend a lot of time on here writing about the virtues of health from the things that we put on our skin and in our bodies, to the cleaning products that we use around our homes, but I haven't touched as much on the spiritual aspects and benefits of opening up to the real you, and learning to love yourself. I have always wanted to talk more about the power of truly loving yourself and how that love will bring everything else that you are looking for in your life. It probably sounds a little hoaky to you, but part of my success here on The Hippy Homemaker comes from the happiness I get from fulfilling my dreams and living in my own skin, daily. I won't settle for less than those two things. EVER! Continue reading “Inspire Creativity Using Aromatherapy – DIY Muse Essential Oil Blend”
