My dog Sirius loves to go on adventures with me, whether it be hiking in the woods or kayaking on a river, he is down to play. I am currently planning a solo backpacking trip down the Lone Star Hiking Trail (100 mi) and plan to bring him along to keep me company. It goes without saying, the trouble that dogs can get themselves into, just by being themselves. They are after all, just as excited as we are to get out and play! Sometimes that means you have to step into Mom/Dad mode and take care of them when they need you the most. Continue reading “Heal Your Pup’s Wounds & Soften Paws With DIY Fido’s Boo-Boo Balm”
Last week the kiddo came home from school more tired than usual. Within an hour of being home, he started complaining that his whole body ached and suddenly without warning his temperature shot up through the roof. With the news constantly talking about all the flu cases in my area, and my personal social media page full of friends and family members that are down for the count, I knew immediately that he had come down with the flu. With everyone looking to find health this time of year, detox teas are all the rage, but the price of some of these teas are over the top! I scoured the grocery shelves, the internet, and even Etsy to compare prices and ingredients but nothing beats how much cheaper it is to make these teas in bulk at home! Not only that, you can tailor your teatox to fit your needs. Continue reading “Wake Me Up With a Cup of Mornin' Sunshine Tea – a DIY Morning Boost Tea for Energy, Weight-Loss, & Detoxification”
Tis' the season of detoxes, workout programs, and juice fasts and I'm over here wishing all my detox options weren't so intense. I've tried the teatoxes that made my intestines cry, the juice fasts that made me realize I can't handle the feeling of an empty stomach, and even the intense diet changes that had me craving whatever it was I'd given up for the week. While I have found helpful lessons in all of my health-seeking adventures, I can be a bit lazy and prefer much gentler methods of detoxing. Which is why I was excited to discover charcoal lemonade, or as I like to call it; dirty lemonade!
I LOVE a good soak in the tub with herbs and salts, and during this month of detox, your body will appreciate it too! While you are busy getting into working out and eating healthier, your muscles are probably feeling all of your hard work. One of my favorite natural ways to soothe muscle pain and help my muscles to recover faster, after a good workout, is with a rosemary lime herbal salt bath.
It's the dawn of a new year, and I am feeling the yearly need to detoxify myself inside and out! I know I am not alone, so this year I have a whole slew of detoxifying posts to help get you through this first month of the new year. Really, though, you could choose to detoxify yourself at any point during the year! I love to try and focus on detoxification once a month!
It's that time of year when the kiddo is bringing home all sorts of viruses from school and I am trying my best to keep him healthy through it all. The problem is, even at my best, he is so picky that it's nearly impossible for me to find a healthy version of things that he's willing to try. One of my favorite ways to get him his vitamins and minerals while he is under the weather is with my Flowerchild Immune Support* Electrolyte pops! I combine my Flowerchild Refreshment punch, electrolyte-rich coconut water, and citrus juice, along with mineral-rich salts to make popsicles that help replenish electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals when your kiddo needs them the most!*
I have a secret ingredient that I prefer to use in place of the water in ALL of my DIY beauty products and toiletries. Hydrosols, aka flower waters! I first came across hydrosols in my essential oil studies. I had learned that they were a result of making essential oils, essentially a byproduct. I was fascinated by these gentle essential oil infused waters. Along the way, I learned a lot more about them and their many uses and varieties. I wanted to purchase every hydrosol that I came across but was sorely disappointed when I realized that I couldn't afford to purchase all of the hydrosols that I wanted. What is a DIY loving hippy to do? Make it myself, of course! Now you can too!
Recently we've been dealing with all sorts of eye issues in my home. Everything from conjunctivitis to infection, and not just in the humans in our home. When Syfy became ill with pneumonia and strep throat, he also managed to spread the strep to his eyes, getting conjunctivitis too. Our pediatrician prescribed $60 eye drops, saying that they likely wouldn't work because most of the time conjunctivitis is viral, but just in case we should use the eye drops. I am not one to overuse antibiotics and am not willing to use them unless they are absolutely needed. Out of desperation, I began investigating all my herbal books, looking for the best herbs to use to help soothe Syfy's eyes and get rid of the infection. That's when I realized that I already had everything that I needed to help my family and pets with all their eye irritations!
I spent my childhood hiking, backpacking, and camping with my Dad, all over the West coast. I was the daughter that adored the outdoors and couldn't get enough, no matter how dirty or banged up, that I got. The addiction was solidified when we first started hiking through Yosemite National Park. With every trip we took, I soaked in the redwoods and sequoias, the glacier cut boulders and the majestic waterfalls that seem to only exist in Yosemite and my dreams. These trips made me realize that I was born to enjoy the outdoors and that my future was somehow going to be connected to my passion for this amazing place. Fast forward 20 years and now I am planning how I can instill the same great love of the outdoors, in my own son.
