Save Money Making Your Own Herbal Hydrosols and Flower Waters

I have a secret ingredient that I prefer to use in place of the water in ALL of my DIY beauty products and toiletries. Hydrosols, aka flower waters! I first came across hydrosols in my essential oil studies. I had learned that they were a result of making essential oils, essentially a byproduct. I was fascinated by these gentle essential oil infused waters. Along the way, I learned a lot more about them and their many uses and varieties. I wanted to purchase every hydrosol that I came across but was sorely disappointed when I realized that I couldn't afford  to purchase all of the hydrosols that I wanted. What is a DIY loving hippy to do? Make it myself, of course! Now you can too!

Like all of my other beauty products, this is what led me to create my own herbal infused eyelash growth serum, instead. Continue reading

Natural Herbal Hair Color for Healthy Hair – Hippy Natural Hair Care Series Part 4

I have spent a lot of years of my life changing my hair color based on my flittering emotions and the change of seasons. I am a big proponent of self-expression and coloring my hair has always been one of my favorite ways to express myself, but over the last few years, I have come to find out that all of those conventional hair dyes I was using is absolutely terrible for me and for the planet. Over time, I was destroying my hair and ingesting nasty toxic chemicals, with every dye job that I performed. Finally, after wanting to grow my hair out, I realized that my hair had never gotten passed my shoulders because all of the damage I was doing to it was causing my hair to break off. I decided I needed to make a change and how I was coloring my hair was the first thing on that list. After trying henna, I don't think I can ever go back to conventional hair dyes. I mean, the toxic chemicals is enough on its own to keep me away for good…but the conditioning that henna provides to your hair is simply divine, all while coloring it. I can not profess enough my love for henna. Continue reading

Over the last two weeks, we have been learning all about natural hair care. Last week, we learned about natural no-poo cleansers that are not too harsh to use on your hair. This week, we are learning about natural conditioners, especially the kind that don't include oils in them. While learning my way through natural hair care and the no-poo method, I have found that carrier oils by themselves, are very difficult to get out of your hair without shampoo and suds. This caused me to look in depth at other non-oil conditioner choices. There are actually many options out there, in you pantry alone, that you can use to condition your hair. Continue reading

Natural No-Poo Cleansers for Healthy Hair – Hippy Natural Hair Care Series Part 2

Last week, in my first Natural Hair Care post, I wrote to you about why I will not use baking soda on my own hair. We learned about ph and how it affects your hair and scalp, and that baking soda is WAY too alkaline for our hair.We now know that our hair prefers to keep a ph of 4.5, and when we cleanse our hair or use any other kinds of hair products, we want to make sure its ph is  within 4.5-7 to keep our scalp and hair ph balanced. Since I don't use baking soda on my hair when I no-poo, you all were VERY curious as to what I actually DO use instead. Today I am going to give you several ph-balanced options to try so that you can find the right one for your hair, and at the end of this post, I will share my own personal ramped up the recipe that I have been using on MY hair.
