All You Need is a Basket Full of Silks and Your Imagination – A Sarah’s Silks Review

What adult could have guessed that a basket full of silk squares in a myriad of colors could equal the best time ever for a young child? Certainly not me. When I first began my journey reading about Waldorf education and the natural toys that went with it, I must admit that I totally laughed a little at the rainbow silks being sold in the natural stores. I had read that they are extremely popular in Waldorf kindergartens and that children LOVED them for their ability to use them for all sorts of open-ended imaginative play. “Really?!?” I thought to myself. It seemed that my adult imagination couldn't see passed the simplicity of it all. Boy, was I in for a fun surprise!

A Space to Call His Own – My Journey finding an eco-friendly kid’s desk for our homeschool classroom – A DesksForKids Review

Can't you tell by the shape of the seat, it's made for your butt, and not your feet? That's what my Grandma used to say to me as a child. It always stuck around in my head because of the nifty rhyme, and I have even been caught saying it to Syfy every now and then (I have to keep her memory alive somehow!). Though I do not plan on our homeschool kindergarten being tethered to a desk, I did want to create a personal workspace where Syfy could sit down and craft, paint, or otherwise do his creative thing. Safely Painting With The Earth, A Kid’s Natural Earth Paint Review – #HippyHomeschool Giveaway

What kid doesn't like to paint? It's creative, messy, and so much fun, but it can also be hard to find paints that are totally non-toxic and made from natural eco-friendly materials. I can understand if you don't have enough time to make all of your paints yourself, so you must be wondering what's safe to buy instead? While Crayola and Roseart coloring supplies are labeled non-toxic, they're all made with petroleum-based ingredients that we are trying to avoid in our own homeschool.  Continue reading “Safely Painting With The Earth, A Kid's Natural Earth Paint Review – #HippyHomeschool Giveaway”

We’re Homeschooling the Nature Way With “A Child’s World” Nature Inspired Curriculum – #HippyHomeschool Giveaway

What is nature to you? To me, nature is a classroom full of endless possibilities, with lessons ready to be learned, and answers to all of my deepest questions. I grew up out in nature. It has always felt like my REAL home and is the one place where I am able to let go and forget all of my outside worries. Nature has been a driving force in my education as well. As a child, I was deeply fascinated with the ocean and the rainforest. I was obsessed with learning more about each of these biomes, and spent hours taking up our 1 phone line, using the internet to search for more information. This was truly the beginning of my green loving hippy ways. Nature has been at the heart of my education, from the day that my dad took me on my first hike. Making Paints Like the Greats DIY Natural Herbal Earth Paints – Natural Hippy Homeschool Series

What would this world be without paint? Life would be so boring and our understanding of each other's experiences would be gone. Pieces of art through the ages, help us to understand better what was going on in the time period that it was created. Without paint, we would have no picture of humanity through the ages. I grew up with a love for all things creative, but my mother was the one who instilled in me a deep love for art and the need to express my own self through it.  Continue reading “Making Paints Like the Greats DIY Natural Herbal Earth Paints – Natural Hippy Homeschool Series”

Color the Rainbow With Homemade Block & Stick Wax Crayons – Natural Hippy Homeschool Series

Crayons are a household staple, whether you have kiddos or not. Pretty much every American I know, grew up coloring with crayons as some point in their lives. I grew up with a plethora of art supplies, including the big box of Crayola crayons. You know what I am talking about…Macaroni & Cheese, Cerulean blue, Jungle green; a big box of pretty much every color you could imagine. (Cerulean blue and Jungle green are still my two favorites to this day!) I knew, when setting up Syfy's natural homeschool, that the first thing we needed to stock up on were crayons. What homeschool (or any school for that matter) doesn't have crayons? Now you can stock up with homemade crayons made with ingredients from nature. Gettin’ Sticky With It – 5 Homemade Glue & Paste Recipes (Gluten-Free & Vegan recipes included) – Natural Hippy Homeschool Series

Glue is the fiber that binds our crafts together. It holds the paper together in our collages and binds our pages together in our homemade books. Glue is what holds the googly eyes onto the fearsome monsters and feathers onto our beautiful birds. Glue is one of the most important ingredients to any homeschool classroom, but did you know that you could easily make it using natural ingredients from your pantry? I definitely didn't realize it was so easy to make it myself. DIY Natural Herbal Ink & Feather Pen – Natural Hippy Homeschool Series

I am not sure why, but somehow I always thought that ink-making was a thing of the past. I grew up with pens that just worked automatically and never really knew where or how ink was made. I am not even sure that I cared about ink and it's history until I took it upon myself to learn how to make ink for myself. It may sound silly, but I find the idea of being able to make EVERYTHING that we need to sustain our livelihoods, without having to rely on some other source, to be really awesome. Ink is one of those things that is needed for so many purposes and is very easy to create. Saving knowledge, writing letters, and learning to read and write, all require ink (when no computers are involved!). Because of ink, we are able to grasp our history and learn from mistakes.  Continue reading “DIY Natural Herbal Ink & Feather Pen – Natural Hippy Homeschool Series”

We’re Starting Kindergarten! Create Your Own Natural Hippy Homeschool

It's crazy to me, how time flies. On the day that Syfy was born, I can vaguely remember wondering to myself what it would be like to have a school age child. I thought, “Only the best for him” (like just about every mom out there). At first, I didn't realize that that meant I was going to be his Kindergarten teacher. I didn't go into parenthood planning to homeschool, it just somehow found me, and then followed me around until I finally agreed to do it.  Continue reading “We're Starting Kindergarten! Turn Up the Rouge On Your Cheeks – DIY Foxy Face Powdered Blush

Some people have the natural ability to make a rouge color in their cheeks, just with the thought of something that embarrasses them. Others have constant pink cheeks all day, every day. While others have to supplement the rouge in their cheeks using blush. Since the dawn of makeup, women have been applying blush to their cheekbones, trying to make them look higher and more prominent than the next girls. Even Cleopatra used rouge on her cheeks, though she chose to color her cheeks using carmine (a red color that comes from an insect!) rather than beet root (the vegetable color we will use today!)
