The Hippy Homemaker’s Green Cleaning Starter Kit – The Ultimate Green Friendly Wedding Present

I had the privilege of being invited to one of my long-time friend's wedding and reception this last weekend. Though we weren't able to go to Colorado to make the actual wedding, we were able to go to their reception dinner held here in Texas. When our invitation arrived in the mail, my first thought was “what to make them for their wedding present?”  For a little over a year now, I have made all of the gifts that I have given at the parties that I have been invited to.  Each time, I was invited to a new type of party (i.e. baby showers, bridal showers, and wedding receptions), I came up with a new DIY eco-friendly gifts that I could give. This time around was no different. Continue reading “The Hippy Homemaker's Green Cleaning Starter Kit – The Ultimate Green Friendly Wedding Present”

DIY Dishwasher Tablets For Hard or Soft Water (and homemade Lemishine)

In our old house, I was utilizing castile soap in my dishwasher and always getting fantastic results. I had no clue that the difference in my water softness could make such a huge difference in how well some of my natural cleaning products worked. When we moved into our new home, my first load of dishes came out of the dishwasher covered in a white film. I was beyond disappointed.  At first, I had no idea what had happened, but after doing some reading, I found my problem. If you have really hard water, castile soap will turn the water cloudy, and consequently, will cause your glasses to come out cloudy too. I knew that now I needed to come up with a new dishwashing plan for hard water. Make Your Own Natural Citrus Softscrub For Your Sinks, Tubs, and Toilets!

I have a “friend” with a bathtub that is so gross, they didn't even want their name to be revealed out of embarrassment, but they did want me to find a great way to clean their bathtub (and sinks, toilets, etc.). I knew that they were looking for a soft scrub, so I got to work finding a recipe that would help to clean up all of the nastiness that was caked on the bathtub's floor.  After a preliminary search of the internet, I found pretty much the same recipes everywhere that I went, and all of them combined both vinegar AND castile soap, and as I have been learning (from Lisa Bronner's blog), that is a big no-no. Make Your Own All Natural Dish Soap

After our dishwasher broke, we waited for a month for the maintenance crew to actually fix it. Long story short, it's been 2 months and no one has come to fix our broken dishwasher. That's ok! The hippy husband suggested that we wash our dishes by hand for a few months and see the difference it makes on our electricity bill! (You gotta love a husband who so willingly follows in the quest of living a more sustainable lifestyle!) After I finally ran out of the Dawn dish soap that I had been finishing up, I needed a new dish soap that I could make just like all of the other cleaning products in my house. At first I tried only using castile soap as my dish soap but I needed something to cut the grease. The first recipe I tried combined castile soap with lemon juice and vinegar, but I eventually realized that the reason that the solution curdled so often was because I was mixing castile soap (a base) with vinegar and lemon (an acid) which was advised against by Dr. Broner's themselves because the acid/base chemical reaction makes the soap de-saponify causing it to no longer be soap and render it useless as far as cleaning. Mini Potato Skins Stuffed With Avocado Salsa

I got this recipe from Vegetarian Times (Pg. 52, August/September 2012) magazine. It's actually a Chloe Coscarelli recipe also in her new cookbook, “Chloe's Kitchen”. This was soooo good. We just ate it tonight and I am so stuffed just from eating these alone. I didn't even end up making a side dish as this makes 20 potato halves. I made a few changes to the recipe but they are more additions than anything else. I doubled the cumin because after taste testing (Always taste while you cook. How would you know if you need to fix something if you aren't tasting???) Continue reading “Mini Potato Skins Stuffed With Avocado Salsa”

My World Famous Sensational Salsa and Glorious Guacamole…well maybe not WORLD famous

I LOVE salsa. I mean I REALLY LOVE salsa. So much so, that when I make a really BIG batch, I eat it all in less than 24 hours. Seriously! You can ask my husband, he always complains that he didn't even get to eat any. If you have a food processor (Mine is the Ninja. It's the best food processor out there!), the salsa is a snap. I also like to put the salsa that I just made, into the guacamole. I just can't stand jarred salsa. It has

Cilantro Lime Sweet Potatoes & Carrots, with Citrus Oven Baked Broccoli

This recipe is ALL my own. I Love sweet potatoes and I am always trying to find a new way to serve them. They are so delicious that right now, as we speak, I am frothing at the mouth! I decided to make a nice beta carotine mix with this and for better vitamin absorbency, I added lime. Who uses lime without cilantro (besides you weirdos that don't like cilantro!)? Of course I had to add cilantro and it turned out to be DELICIOUS paired with sweet potatoes and carrots. Continue reading “Cilantro Lime Sweet Potatoes & Carrots, with Citrus Oven Baked Broccoli”
