Lip balms are one of the easiest DIY projects that you can start out making! There are so many options and so many great flavors that you can come up with, I could come up with flavors for days! One of the first projects that I learned how to DIY, and what was the start of The Hippy Homemaker Etsy Shoppe.
Great for holiday gifts and party favors
The first time that I made my own homemade lip balms, I was making big batches to give as gifts to everyone on my list for the holidays. One of my favorite far-away friends offered to pay me to make her a set of lip balms for her Christmas gifts too, making her my very first customer. Everyone who received my homemade lip balms that year raved over how much they LOVED them! The flavor, peppermint lavender (see below for recipe), became a fan favorite that year! When you make lip balms, you don't just make one, there's always enough for your friends too! These lip balms make fantastic holiday gifts for the stockings or for party and wedding favors (I actually custom made Rose & Vanilla ones for a friend's wedding, and Razzleberry ones for another friend's wedding!). For some great kids gifts, try making my homemade kid's flavored lip balms!

Cinnamint Spice Lip Plumping Lip Balm
The Cinnamint Spice Lip Plumping Lip Balm does exactly what it says, because of the cinnamon cassia essential oil and the clove essential oils. Both are spicy and warming and thus are considered "skin irritants". Use caution when applying either of these oils to the skin, as excessive amounts not diluted, can cause desensitization to the skin.
INGREDIENTS
- 3 Tbsp. unrefined coconut oil
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. beeswax pastilles
- 1 Tbsp. unrefined Shea butter
- 1/2 Tbsp. castor oil
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 6 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil
- 4 drops clove bud essential oil
- vitamin E (optional)
DIRECTIONS
- In a double boiler (I use a Pyrex measuring cup inside of a large saucepan with about an inch of water.) melt the butter, beeswax, and coconut oil.
- Once melted, remove from heat.
- Mix in the essential oils, vitamin E, and castor oil
. Pour into sterilized containers (tubes, recycled mint tins, etc.) and allow to cool completely before using.
A DIY lip balm tray to hold your lip balms in place
Every other time that I have made lip balm, the leaning foundation in my house has made for a game of "do not knock over the dominoes I have, admittedly knocked an entire batch of cooling lip balm over, just because I was messing with ONE of them. I just didn't have the money to buy myself a set or two of those lip balm filling trays that Mountain Rose Herbs has, so instead, I made my own filling tray! If you turn most egg cartons over (not the plastic/Styrofoam ones), the bottom of each "egg cup" has a circular indention in it that is the perfect size for a lip balm tube, so you don't even have to trace the hole before you cut it! This is the most BRILLIANT idea I have ever utilized.
